Why I'm a Fan
I'm a fan (and you should be too) because...A voice with a great uniqueness and spirit...whip-smart songwriting with great depth of feeling...these are not qualities that come along every day...Ray has BOTH...and, as I've just discovered from his and the Pariah dogs show at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, a quiet but unmistakeable command of live performance that belies his youth. You'd have to refer to people like Dylan, the Wainrights, or Elvis Costello to find adequate comparisons. O.K. so he may be a bit on the shy side onstage, but having 8,000 people go nuts over your music takes some getting used to. I sincerely hope to see this man in concert dozens of times.
That was an amazing set at the greek theater! As a musician who has been attending shows (over 300) for over thirty years, I have to say that it only took Ray and The Dogs one show to get onto my short list of "must see as much as humanly possible" (which features folks like Bob Dylan, Neil Young, The Who, Aimee Mann, Elvis Costello, etc) photos of the set are at:
